North London Step into Sport Camp – Developing and Demonstrating Leadership

25th January 2016

Vale school welcomed 15 budding young sports leaders from Riverside, West Lea, Oaktree, Durrants and the Vale to its Step into Sport Camp.

The young leaders were inspired by the visit of Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby star Steve Brown. The Paralympian told the students his personal sporting story, reflecting on the qualities required to develop as a role model and leader. The leaders were also joined by local athlete role model Joel Kiffin and his coach Michael Wilson. Joel, a student from Alexandra Park School, plays cricket for the Middlesex County Cricket Club Disability Team. Joel shared his journey to becoming the teams most improved player of 2015.

The young leaders were then challenged to develop inclusive cricket games to teach to younger Vale pupils using the STEP model, which encourages the adaptation of Space, Task, Equipment and People in order to include all participants.

Armed with their new skills, the young leaders proceeded to take a 45 minute PE lesson.

The day was a great success with all the young leaders  developing their communication, organisation and management skills.
