Dear parents and carers,


Please find below an outline of the subjects/topics that your child will be learning about this Spring term in TG5


Functional Skills Maths

Consolidation of key basic Maths skills with particular focus on Number, Money and Time.

Application of Maths skills in familiar contexts and practical situations:

·         Shopping

·         Use of timetables to plan journeys

·         Selecting the appropriate number rule to calculate a ‘real life’ maths problem

·         Buying snacks/lunch at a café

Year 10 students – preparation for E1/E2 maths qualification

Functional Skills English

Reading – reading and understanding short texts that explain or recount information. Focus on reading clearly and fluently and the use of context clues to read less familiar words.

Writing – writing complex sentences which make sense. Appropriate use of punctuation such as capital letters, commas in lists and full stops. All students will be given E1 practise assessments in preparation for taking their E1 Writing qualification later on in the term.

Speaking and Listening – participation in Speaking and Listening activities with focus on:

·         Speaking and expressing themselves clearly.

·         Understanding of the main points of a discussion

·         Turn taking

·         Expressing opinions

·         Recalling information and relaying messages accurately

Independent Living



Travel Training





Working with WE schools, students will create links and cultural exchanges with refugee support groups in The Haringey Area



The students will continue to work with ‘Transport for London’s S.T.A.R.S’  initiative.

The students will action another project to promote travel confidence. This will include planning journeys, learning the rules of travel and travelling as a group.


‘Using Public Transport’ will investigate and give experience of a journey by bus and over ground train.
