Tutor Group 2 Autumn 2017

13th September 2017

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back to this new academic year. The students are settling in well and appear happy to be back to school. We hope that this year will be not only productive but also successful for all the students. We welcome some new students to join  Mikayla, Tamera, Hava and Allanah in TG2. They are Malachi and Ela, Samaha from the primary department and Chinonsu and Mamadou who are both new to the school.

Please find below an outline of the subjects/topics that your child will be learning about during this autumn term. The theme for this term is ALL ABOUT ME.

Our PODD communication books will be an integral part of our learning. We will focus on developing vocabulary, sentence structure and making consistent and clear choices.

We will read various books throughout the term, so the students are exposed to a wide range of texts. We will look at the structure of books, and we will try to get the pupils create their own stories about themselves. Phonics will also be worked on. We will focus on initial sounds of names, as well as key letters- m, a, s, d, t, I and n.

Writing will involve the pupils to create vertical, horizontal and circular stokes. Sentences will be written using symbols and some pupils will copy write simple sentences, focusing on the formation of letters.

Counting numbers from 0-100 will be focused on, Filling in the missing numbers, counting objects and matching it to numerals. Functional skills will be very important for the students in TG2. They will work on everyday skills that involve number, such as getting the right amount of pencils for the class or giving out bean bags to each pupil.

When working on shape, space and measure, the students will work on life skills such as baking, cooking and shopping.

With the topic; ALL ABOUT ME, the pupils will look at the human body, recognise facial features as well as other key body parts. They will learn to indicate where particular parts are by naming, indicating or signing.

The PHSE curriculum is embedded in all aspects of TG2’s day. trips within the local area, focussing on positive interactions with friends and adults. The PODD communication system and Makaton signs will be used to support social communication. Social skills games during lunch time activities will help students interact with each other with a focus on independence.

ICT is integral to the curriculum and will be used in all subject areas. The key skills we will work on this term are for the children to become more familiar with the QWERTY keyboard and with help type their names or the initial letter of their name.

Expressive Arts

Music, Dance and Art will be taught on a weekly basis. The students will have opportunities to develop their understanding of a healthier life style and the importance of exercise during P.E and dance sessions. When engaged in music, art and dance lessons they will learn to become more imaginative and express themselves and communicate creatively.

If you have any questions regarding this information, please do not hesitate to ask.

Yours sincerely,
