Tutor Groups 4 and 5 Autumn 2017

Dear Parents,

 

Over the next term those of us in TG4 and TG5 will be following a unit of work on a theme that focuses on ‘Ourselves’.

 

This unit of work is part of the International Primary Curriculum. This new curriculum

sets out very clearly what children will learn the learning goals in three different areas:

 

1. The subjects of the curriculum.

 

2. Personal development

 

3. International understanding

 

Each unit of work is based around specific targets derived from the learning goals for one or more of the subjects.

 

During this unit we will be focusing on Society, Science, Art, Music and International studies.

 

In Society, we’ll be finding out:

·                How the way we feel has an effect on other people

·                How to deal with bullying

·                What makes us happy/unhappy

·                What we feel about our school

In Science, we’ll be finding out:

·                If feelings come from the heart or the brain

·                If animals have feelings and emotions

 

In Technology, we’ll be finding out:

·                How advertising can change the way we feel about certain products

·                If we can design a product to make us feel relaxed

In Art, we’ll be finding out:

·                How feelings and emotions can inspire artists

·                What local artists feel about the home or host country

·                How we can share our feelings through art

In Music, we’ll be finding out:

·                How musicians use feelings and emotions in their music

·                How music can affect our feelings

·                How we can control our feelings through music

In International Studies, we’ll be finding out:

·                How feelings are expressed around the world

·                How extreme negative feelings can lead to war

   In maths, we’ll be learning:

·                Place value and applying this knowledge to adding and subtracting 10s, 100s and 1000s

·                Formal methods of addition and subtraction

·                Formal methods of multiplication and division

·                Reading the time on an analogue clock and using timetables

·                Calculating amounts of money, addition and giving change.

·                Length, Weight, capacity and temperature

·                Applying these skills to real life problems.

 

In English, we’ll be learning:

·                Adjectives, verbs and nouns and how to apply these in a sentences.

·                Using conjunctions to create compound and complex sentences.

·                Using punctuation appropriately in our writing.

·                Applying these skills in a narrative

·                Imperative verbs

·                Applying these skills to persuasive writing.

 

    In Independent Living, we’ll be learning:

·                Learning to access public transport.

·                Visiting key places of interest in the local area.

·                Smile project – learning to order a cup of tea          

 

All of the work we are going to do has been specially written to help your child reach the learning goals. Children will be reading, researching, writing, illustrating, working on their own and working in groups. We will be checking to see how well your child has learned through particular activities and asking children to explain their work, perhaps to you.

 

 

By the end of the unit, we hope your child has achieved all of the learning targets. We hope they have had an enjoyable time in the classroom.
