Polar Bear Class Autumn 2017

September 2017

Dear Parents and Carers,

It is delightful to welcome back the children to Polar Bear Class and especially to meet pupils who have joined the class this term.  The children are re-establishing their friendships and making friends with their new classmates and the adults in class.  We are all so impressed with how quickly children have settled back into the school environment. It will be exciting to watch them learn and explore together this year.  We are making the most of the last mild weather by spending as much time as we can outside in the playground, the garden and the local park.  We are beginning to establish our class routines and looking forward to a busy and very positive Autumn term.

The Polar Class team for 2017-2018 will be Mary, Moira, Maureen and Charlotte.  The theme for this term is ‘Ourselves’.

Our cross curricular approach will provide us with inspiration and lots of opportunities to investigate this theme through play and exploration, alongside more structured adult led tasks; to develop language, communication and early maths skills, as well as enabling children to gain confidence through expressive arts activities. There will be a strong emphasis on developing speaking and listening skills in conjunction with the use of the PODD communication books and the use of Makaton signs.

Personal, social and emotional development will focus on developing self-awareness and an awareness of others and our environment. In particular, we will be supporting children to develop their independence through their interaction with and understanding of daily routines and functional skills.

Our curriculum aims to develop an understanding of the world through a varied diet of activities including cooking, gardening, ICT focussed sessions and exploration of the local environment.

There will be weekly dance and music lessons with specialist teachers.  We also have weekly input from Spurs coaches for P.E. sessions, which help to develop a wide range of cross curricular skills. Nora will be introducing Special Yoga which incorporates stretching and strengthening of the body as well as calming and focusing of the mind.

There will also be opportunities for inclusion with mainstream peers from Lancasterian School during the school week, both in class and in the shared playground areas.

Please keep using the home/school books to let us know about things you do with your child at the weekends or about any other news you wish to share – so that we can talk about this to the children at the beginning of the day.

With Best wishes from Mary James  (class teacher)
