Brown Bear Class Autumn 2018

September 2018

Dear Parents and Carers,

Our Topic this half-term is ‘Animals’.

The children have settled in really well after the Summer Holidays.  We have a new member of the Class and the children have made her feel very welcome.  They continue to be a lively and active class and keep us very busy.

The children have lots of opportunities to develop their Personal, Social and Emotional skills and have been happy spending time together. We do this through daily circle-time sessions and games and of course, celebrating special birthdays.

In our Literacy sessions, we will be reading stories, using rhymes, playing games and singing songs with links to our topic.  Our focus stories this term are ‘Handa’s Surprise’ and ‘Dear Zoo’. The children’s love of stories is fostered through the use of props, photos, symbols and our Interactive Whiteboard.  This half-term, we will be working on communication skills and participating in a variety of sensory activities, as well as developing an understanding of the sequence of a story.  There will also be lots of opportunities for encouraging children to interact with their peers. Children are supported to develop their self-confidence and self-awareness, by making choices. They are given support to develop their different ways of communication through the use of Podd books, symbols, Makaton signs, and real objects.

In Maths sessions we will be concentrating on shapes, counting sequences using familiar rhymes and games on the Interactive Whiteboard. We will be exploring weights and measures during our weekly cooking activities.

To support children with their Physical Development, our lovely Spurs coaches have been playing with the children and have been passing on their ball skills.. Where possible, children will be enjoying outdoor play and experiencing all the elements, either in their chairs or in their walkers.  Weekly Hydrotherapy sessions and the Soft Room, gives the children a safe space in which to move freely. This term we will be making the most of the outside environment.  We will be making trips to the local park when possible.

Following our Expressive Arts and Design Curriculum, the children have opportunities to explore the world around them through first-hand exploration and sensory play. We will continue to enjoy our twice weekly music sessions with our music teacher, Laura and spend time daily in class exploring movement, music and dance. Our dance teacher, Zoe will be working with us to explore and move our bodies to music. The children are also enjoying their weekly ballet class and having great fun.

Please use the home/school books to let us know about things your child is doing at home, so that we can talk about it at school with them.

Please keep using the home/school books to let us know about things you do with your child at the weekends or about any other news you wish to share – so that we can talk about this with the children at the beginning of the day.

Best wishes,

Merja and the Brown Bear Team
