Brown Bear Class Autumn 2019

September 2019

Dear Parents and Carers,

In Brown Bear Class this term we will be exploring the topic of ’The World around Us’.

Throughout the school day, the children are given lots of opportunities to develop their Personal, Social and Emotional skills and are getting to know new children who have joined the class. We incorporate daily circle-time sessions and games, so that they can spend quality time together. We have had a couple of birthdays in class already and the children are always excited to celebrate with their friends. During the day children are supported to develop their self-confidence and self-awareness, through making choices.

We have a Total Communication approach throughout the school and use  Podd books, symbols, Makaton sign and real objects to support children’s understanding. These strategies are used consistently throughout the school day.

The children’s love of stories is fostered  and supplemented with the use of props, photos, symbols and our Interactive Whiteboard.  This term we will be reading stories about our environment, for example ‘We’re going on a Bear Hunt’, The Gruffalo’.  We will be exploring the school both inside and out and going on our own ‘Bear Hunt’.  We will also make local trips to the park and further afield.  We will learn about people who help us and make visits to local shops.

Following our Expressive Arts and Design Curriculum, the children will have opportunities to explore the world around them through first-hand exploration and sensory play. We will continue to enjoy our weekly music sessions with our music teacher, Laura and spend time daily in class exploring movement, music and dance. We will be exploring recycled materials and making our own ‘Junkhouse Band’. Our dance teacher, Zoe will be working with us to explore and move our bodies to music. Messy Play and exploration of different media and materials will encourage children to explore and use their senses to better understand the world around them.

To support children with their Physical Development, our Spurs coaches will be playing with the children and passing on their ball skills. The children will participate in regular games of basketball and skittles. When possible, children will be enjoying outdoor play and experiencing all the elements, either in their chairs or in their walkers.  Weekly Hydrotherapy sessions and the use of the large soft room will allow the children to have a safe and imaginative space in which to move freely.  We will be exploring the effects of physical exercise on our bodies and how we can look after ourselves and stay healthy.

We would like to form a learning-link partnership with you, so that we can work together to help your child learn in the best possible way. Please help by capturing your child’s curiosity and keeping us informed about what he/she is most interested in doing at home. This helps us to plan relevant learning experiences that will appeal to your child’s curiosity. You can do this through the home/school book. We very much hope your child will enjoy exploring this topic with us.

Best wishes,

Merja and the Brown Bear Team
