Polar Bear Class Autumn 2021

September 2021

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope that all our pupils and families had an enjoyable summer holiday and are pleased to be back in school. We are excited to have our returning children back and to welcome our new children and their families to Polar Bear Class. The children are settling in well, re-establishing their friendships and making new friends with new classmates and adults in the class.  We are beginning to establish our class routines and look forward to a busy and very positive Autumn term.

We have lots of exciting things planned for the year ahead and we are looking forward to lots of fun and learning. The theme for Autumn term is ‘My Toy Shop’ through which children will be exploring the theme of ‘Toys and Games’. Over the next few weeks children will be involved in all sorts of fun activities to do with toys and games to encourage sharing, turn taking skills and anticipation.

In our Communication and Language/Literacy sessions we will be reading stories, using rhymes, playing games and singing songs with links to the topic. Our Literacy activities will include daily phonics activities to explore sounds and rhythms. We will focus on developing language and communication skills, with an emphasis on listening, speaking, signing and using objects of reference, visual timetable and symbols.  Children will be exploring a range of stories such as, ‘Kipper’s Toy Box’, ‘The Paper Dolls’, ‘The Everywhere Bear’, ‘The Blue Balloon’, ‘Up, Up, Up’ and many more.

During Maths sessions we will concentrate on exploring numbers and quantities, patterns, colours and shapes. We will do this  through cooking, sensory exploration and anticipation games.

Children will continue to learn about routines and turn taking and they will be encouraged to be as independent as possible. We will focus on communicating our preferences and choices using symbols and photos. During our daily circle time sessions children will have a chance to express their feelings with symbols and Makaton signs.

Regular Attention and Focus sessions will develop natural and spontaneous communication through the use of visually based and highly motivating activities. Attention and Focus sessions are fun and ‘offer an irresistible invitation to learn’!

Creative Development: Music, Art and PE

During our class music sessions with Laura we will be working on our listening skills, start and stop abilities and responding to music through movement. We will be learning songs and recalling basic tunes.

During art sessions children will be exploring colours and materials through mark making activities.

We will have as many outdoor activities as possible while the weather is good. The focus will be on walking, standing and balancing and making the most of the outdoor space available.

Pupils will be learning about different body parts and different senses. Messy Play and exploration of different media and materials will encourage children to explore and use their senses to better understand the world around them.

Thank you in advance for your support.  We look forward to discussing your child’s progress at their PSP (Personal Support Plans) and Annual Review meetings.

With Best Wishes,

Lilia (class teacher) and Moira, Charlotte, Caroline and Tammie.
