Teddy Bear Class Spring 2022

January 2022

Dear Parents and Carers,

We are settling back into the new Spring Term and looking forward to the Spring weather which hopefully is not too far away. All children in Teddy Bear Class have their own targets which were set with you last term and the children are working hard towards reaching those. We will be focusing on developing the daily routines which were established last term.

Our circle times are based around familiar songs and choice making. We are supporting and encouraging the children to be as independent as possible within this e.g. putting their own equipment in the “Finished Box”. The children are becoming skilled at clearly identifying if they want to use the shaker or the scarf (for “peek-a a-boo”) during our “Good Morning” session.

Much of our work is centred around giving the children many different sensory activities. The adults working with your children will encourage them to touch and then explore wet, damp and dry materials such as flour, water, playdoh, paint, glue, oats, sand, soil etc. to name but a few.

Many of these materials can be messy! We try hard to cover their clothes with an apron or a T shirt but sometimes wearing something that is unfamiliar to them prevents them from fully enjoying the activity. If possible please send your child to school in clothes that you do not mind getting dirty. The messier your child, the more they have enjoyed the activities of the day!

With these sensory activities in mind we will be working with two popular books by Nick Sharratt “Ketchup On Your Cornflakes” and ‘Don’t Put Your Finger In The Jelly, Nelly”

Part of our daily routine always allows time for the children to be supported to access individual activities and play with some of the toys in the room. Young children learn best through play and alongside adults who know their interests and next steps (targets). We have lots of toys which operate through pressing a switch, tactile toys where different textures can be explored and apparatus such as balls, bricks of different sizes. Through these toys we can introduce number and new vocabulary.

The children will enjoy weekly sessions of dance, music and singing with specialist teachers. The children learn about the sounds and vibrations different instruments and equipment make and learn a range of songs which are then sung in our weekly Whole School singing sessions which are currently accessed via Zoom.

We are able to access the sensory room in the class and also the dedicated outside space so your children will have a change of scene and feel throughout the course of the day.

If you notice your child is enjoying something in particular please let us know and we may be able to incorporate this in class. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.

Best Wishes
