Tutor Group 5 Summer 2022

April 2022

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back to the Summer term. We have a lot planned for this term in TG5 which is outlined below.

Topic

Our History and Geography topic is ‘Pirates’ and ‘Under the Sea’. We will be using these themes to learn about rules, laws and the different roles we all play in society. We will look at maps of where pirates operated and think about what life at sea would have been like. We will link this to where in the world the food we eat comes from and if pirates would have eaten them.

English/ Communication

We will continue our focus on phonics using the ‘Little Wandle Letters and Sounds’ format. There will be different letter sounds that the students will focus on each week. We will use ‘Big Cats’ books to reinforce and embed  the phonics skills as well as have weekly homework. Shape coding activities will help develop verbal and written sentences. Again, homework on sentence building will be given out. The smiLe project was a great success and we will continue to work on these skills within the school and wider community.

Maths

Topics we will cover this term are- place value, addition and subtraction, time, money, shape, multiplication and division. We will try to make some of these themes practical for each student, such as visiting local shops, exchanging money and communicating with the general public.  Weekly homework will be set based on the week’s theme.

PSHE

In PSHE, we will be focusing on ‘Self care, Support and Safety’. We will be talking about why, and how to take care of ourselves and our belongings and discuss subjects like personal possessions, borrowing and sharing. We will do role play activities around the ideas of public and private and think about what things it is ok to keep private and how these concepts might link to personal safety.

Science

Our Science topic this term is Materials. We will be learning about the different materials objects can be made of, their properties and why some might be more suitable than others. We will be thinking about the similarities and differences between materials and choosing the right materials for the job based on considerations such as cost, sustainability and suitability. We will attempt to make pirate ships from different materials and testing them against each other.  If you have any questions regarding this information, please do not hesitate to ask.

Yours sincerely,

Pamela Palanyandi
