Koala Class Summer 2022

April 2022

Dear Parents and Carers,

All the children have settled back very well into our daily routine after their Easter Holidays.

The theme for this term is ‘Ocean Treasure/Treasure Island’. In our literacy lessons we will be reading stories, using rhymes, playing games and singing songs linked to this topic. Our focus stories are ‘The Rainbow Fish’ and ’Pirates Love Underpants’. We will continue to develop the children’s interest in books using a selection of Big Books and Poems to stimulate all areas of language. We continue to focus on learning to read and write using the Little Wandle Letters and Sound programme. The children will continue to learn the main sounds of the English language. They will be taught letter sounds, letter formation, and will begin to identify sounds in words for writing and begin to blend letter sounds for reading.

The children will participate in daily numeracy activities, number skills will be practised in a hands-on and practical way with lots of objects and fun songs/number rhymes. The children will be introduced to counting amounts up to 20, recognising numbers 1-20, recognising and describing the properties of 2D and 3D shapes, recognising the passage of time in relation to their day. They will use the language of measure when comparing size and weight and begin to use non-standard units to measure the length, height and weight of objects.

During the Expressive Arts and Design sessions children will explore a range of creative media, e.g. paints, playdough, and cutting and sticking. They will begin to understand colours and how they change. In music children will learn new songs and rhymes and will explore the use of musical instruments.

This term we will be making the most of the outside environment. For science, in the first half term the children will explore different materials and their properties through various of sensory activities.  In the second half term children will learn about living things and their habitats. We will have regular sessions in our garden planting seeds, flowers, tomatoes and herbs, watering them and watching them grow. We will learn about the weather and how it affects the clothes we wear, and engage in imaginative play using small-world models e.g. a farm with animals. We plan to make trips to the local park, shops and the local pond. There will be lots of opportunities to encourage the children to interact with their peers and express themselves through free choice activities, music, art and ICT based sessions.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any queries.
