Brown Bear Class Spring 2023

January 2023

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back to the new term and Happy New Year. This term we will be continuing to use a subject based curriculum in our lessons, while personalising and incorporating the children’s individual targets into these.

We will continue with the development of our listening and communication, turn taking and choosing skills throughout the term. This will be incorporated into all areas of our curriculum. We will also continue with sessions focused on the children’s communication targets and skills. Makaton, Grid 3, visuals (e.g. photographs and symbols) and objects of reference are used to develop the children’s communications skills, support the children’s understanding and for them to use to express their wants and needs. Regular discussions take place with the speech and language therapists to support the children’s individual communication targets.

Physical development

This term we will have special Yoga, dance and swimming on a weekly basis. Our swimming days are Wednesday or Friday. Sometimes extra swimming slots open up on other days. Please send your child’s swimming kit into school for us to keep in case this happens and we will send it home once it has been used. We will also be working regularly with the physiotherapy team to support the children’s individual physical targets.

In maths we are developing anticipation through songs and a range of motivating activities. We will continue to explore number, capacity and colour this term as well as shape. We are continuing with the colour of the day during our morning circle time, which the children have really enjoyed, showing lots of enthusiasm when choosing their objects. The colour for that day will be the same every week; do join in and talk to your child about that colour when they get home: Monday is blue, Tuesday is yellow, Wednesday is Purple, Thursday is Green and Friday is Red. If you would sometimes like your child to wear something to match the colour of day, this would be most welcome.

In phonics we will continue developing our sound differentiation skills, listening to and beginning to recognise different environmental and musical sounds. This term, we will be exploring outside environmental sounds during play and focus sessions, listening to and playing a variety of different instruments and developing our stop and go skills. We will also be exploring rhythm.

In Science our topic is Light. As part of this we will look at light and dark, different light sources and explore colour through light as well. Our sensory story for this topic is ‘Wow said the Owl’ where we will explore light and colour and create our own props to use when reading the story.

Understanding of the World

Our topic this term is ‘My local area’. As part of this we will be visiting different areas around school, exploring rooms we know as well as areas we have not visited before, and  exploring the different ways of getting there. This will include visiting different places in our local area, such as the park, the high street and the supermarket.

In computing we will be learning about the internet, making choices of what we would like to do and requesting help from an adult to access what we would like. We will be using a range of devices such as switches and touch screens for children to explore different ways of accessing chosen activities.

This term our topic for PHSE is Feelings. We will be exploring these topics through stories, rhymes and singing songs. We will discuss our feelings with the children, encouraging them to share their emotions through different communication methods and exploring sounds that link to different emotions as well.

Please email us to let us know how your child is doing during the weekends or any news you would like to share with us – we love to hear about what the children are enjoying outside of school.

Best wishes,

Melanie, Jennifer, Michelle, Melissa and Sandy.
