Brown Bear Class Autumn 2022

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back to the new term. It has been lovely welcoming the children back to school after the summer break. This year we will be using a subject based curriculum in our lessons, while personalising and incorporating the children’s individual targets into these.

We will be developing our listening and communication, turn taking and choosing skills throughout the term. This will be embedded into all areas of our curriculum, through topic, science, nursery rhymes, expressive art and design, story time and learning through play. We will also have daily communication sessions focused on the children’s individual targets. We will continue to develop our communication skills through Makaton, Grid 3 and visuals (e.g. photographs and symbols) to support the children’s understanding and for them to use to express their wants and needs. We will also be working regularly with the speech and language therapists to support the children’s individual communication targets.

Physical development

This term we will have special Yoga, dance and swimming on a weekly basis. Our swimming days are Wednesday or Friday. Sometimes extra swimming slots open up on other days, so please feel free to send your child’s swimming kit into school for us to keep in case this happens, and we will send it home once it has been used. We will also be working regularly with the physiotherapy team to support the children’s individual physical targets.

In maths we are developing anticipation through songs and a range of activities. We will also be exploring number, capacity, measure and colour this term. Number activities will include skittles, counting songs and building blocks. While learning about capacity and measure, we will do activities such as cooking, sand and water play. We will explore colour in a range of artistic activities such as mark making and exploring paint. We are also incorporating colour of the day into our morning circle time, where we will explore a range of objects in that particular colour. The colour for that day will be the same every week; do join in and talk to your child about that colour when they get home: Monday is blue, Tuesday is yellow, Wednesday is Purple, Thursday is Green and Friday is Red.

In phonics we will be developing our sound differentiation skills, listening to and beginning to recognise different environmental and musical sounds. We will be exploring farm animals and their sounds during play and focus sessions, listening to and playing a variety of different instruments and developing our stop and go skills.

In Science our topic is Animals including humans. As part of this we will be exploring the outdoor environment, including visiting the park, looking for insects, animals and birds. We will look at physical representations, sing songs about different animals and listen to noises they make. We will also be reading the sensory story of ‘Dear Zoo’

Understanding of the World

Our topic is My Story. As part of this we will be looking at photos of the children from when they were younger and now to see how they have changed. We will also be looking at photos of their families, giving the children the opportunity to show adults the special people in their lives. Please send these photos either in their bag or via email.

In ICT we will be exploring cause and effect, starting with pop up toys, then moving onto battery operated, switch toys and using household appliances with switches, such as making smoothies in a blender.

This term our topics for PHSE are Things We Are Good At and Kind and Unkind Behaviours. We will be exploring these topics through stories, rhymes and singing songs.

Please email us to let us know how your child is doing during the weekends or any news you would like to share with us – we love to hear about what the children are enjoying outside of school.

Best wishes,

Melanie, Jennifer, Michelle, Melissa and Sandy.
